Pain Management CE Requirements
Frequently Asked Questions
PAIN MANAGEMENT Continuing Education: FAQs

Why are psychologists required to take Pain Management continuing education?
The Oregon State Legislature created Oregon’s Pain Management Program in 1999 to raise awareness about pain management issues among healthcare providers, policy makers and the general public, and to improve access to resources.

How many hours do I need?
Seven hours of pain management-related CE.  One hour must be an online course provided by the Oregon Pain Management Commission (OPMC) at http://www.oregon.gov/DHS/pain/index.shtml.. The remaining six hours can be your choice of pain management topics. This is a one-time requirement.  If a licensee has absolutely no access to a computer, a paper version of the presentation can be mailed. If you require a paper copy of the presentation, please contact Helena Scheratski at the Pain Management Commission Office at 503-947-5383.

Will the Pain Management CE be added to the currently required fifty hours?
No, Pain Management CE will be included in the total.

When do I need to have my hours completed?
  • If your renewal date is December 2008 you have from January 2004 to December 2008 to obtain and report pain management CE’s.
  • If your renewal date is December 2007 you have from January 2004 to December 2009 to obtain and report pain management CE’s.
  • If you are a new licensee you have twenty-four months after your first renewal to obtain and report pain management CE’s.
  • YOU MUST REPORT ALL 7 HOURS OF PAIN MANAGEMENT CE IN ONE REPORTING PERIOD. (i.e., do not report 1 hour in one reporting period and 6 hours in the next reporting period.)

What if I have taken Pain Management CE in the past?  Will they qualify?
If the CE was taken after January 1, 2004, it can qualify.  However, the one-hour online course requirement provided by the Oregon Pain Management Commission must be taken.

How do I know if a particular Pain Management course will meet the CE requirement?
As with all OBPE CE requirements, you must be able to reasonably relate the curriculum to your practice, and the course must be presented by a qualified professional with expertise in the field.

Am I required to prove I have taken the Pain Management CE?  What proof do I need to show the Board?
As with any other CE, licensees will attest to having completed the seven hours of pain management CE on their biennial CE report.  CE reports are verified by random audit.  If you are audited, you will need to provide proof that you have received the 50 hours of CE that you report, including any pain management CE.

Where can I find Pain Management CE courses?
Pain management CE courses are offered occasionally by health-related businesses, as well as professional organizations such as the Oregon Psychological Association.  You may also check for a list of CE courses at http://www.oregon.gov/DHS/pain/index.shtml.
