(May. 12, 2008) - National Weather Service staffers joined city
officials in Lajas, Puerto Rico to conduct the island's second TsunamiReady®
drill. Held at La Parguera Alejandro Tapia
y Rivera Elementary School, the exercise began with the activation
of the earthquake alarm. Evacuation to the pre-determined assembly
point at the Community Center was completed in less than 5 minutes
from La Placita San Pedro.
Puerto Rico Seismic Center Director Christa Von-Hillebrandt , Rafael
Mojica, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather
Service forecast office in San Juan; and Lajas Mayor Marcos Irizarry
were on hand for the drill and news conference.
