A Safe Place for Newborns Law
 
 
To avoid the tragedy of an abandoned baby, Oregon created a law that allows a distressed parent to give up a baby safely, legally, and confidentially. This law allows a birth parent to leave a newborn infant at a hospital, doctor's office, birthing clinic, police station, fire department, or sheriff office.

 
There will be no legal consequences for making this choice as long as the baby:
 
  • is 30 days old or younger,

       
  • is handed to a person at one of the above safe places, and

       
  • shows no signs of abuse.
