Marcus Porcius Cato (234 BC - 149 BC), a senator in the glory days of the Roman Empire, was of the firm belief that his country should attack rival Carthage (Tunisia today). So persistent was Cato, he concluded every speech in the senate—regardless of the subject—with the phrase, “Ceterum censeo, Carthaginem esse delendam,” meaning, “Furthermore, I think Carthage must be destroyed.” Cato’s perseverance paid off: Rome finally launched the Third Punic War and did indeed destroy Carthage. read »
