NIJ Provides DNA Funding for Postconviction Cases
NIJ has awarded $7.8 million to five states to help cover the costs of DNA testing that may prove that innocent people were convicted of serious crimes.
DNA testing has been instrumental in exonerating more than 200 Americans who had been convicted of crimes. The testing process is expensive, and the competitive awards will provide financial assistance to Arizona, Kentucky, Texas, Virginia and Washington.
More information about postconviction DNA.
NIJ has also produced a guide for attorneys, court personnel, advocates and lab personnel about DNA testing. Postconviction DNA Testing: Recommendations for Handling Requests.
