Press Release
July 14, 2006
Congressman Greg Walden to recognize Oregon Army National Guard soldier

Saturday, July 15 at 3 p.m. U.S. Congressman Greg Walden, R-Ore., will present an award to Spc. Tom Hoy, the Oregon Army National Guard soldier who rescued a little girl in the Deschutes River. The presentation will take place at the 1st Squadron 82 Cavalry (RSTA) National Guard armory, 875 SW Simpson Ave. in Bend, Ore. Media and community members are encouraged to attend.

Congressman Walden entered a statement into Congressional Record on July 13, 2006 detailing the heroic actions of Spc. Hoy. The statement he read to members of Congress is attached to this press release.

Spc. Hoy was on a recruiting activity with other Oregon National Guard soldiers when he observed three youths on inner-tubes. They were not wearing life jackets and were floating dangerously near a spillway on the Deschutes River near Newport Avenue in Bend, Ore. A young girl appeared to be in distress and unable to come back to shore. After directing the girl toward him, he waded into the moving water and carried her to safety.

Spc. Hoy is also a reserve police officer in Prineville, where he resides with his wife and two children.
