About 240 members of the Oregon Guard's 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry are currently in Japan supporting Orient Shield 2007, a bilateral exercise conducted annually with the Japanese army.
 
OS CQC 2: Sgt. Avery Kerr of Cornelius watches as members of the JGSDF practice close quarters combat during Oregon Shield in Japan. Kerr's Oregon National Guard unit, 2nd Bn., 162nd Inf., deployed to Iraq in 2004, and the Oregon Soldiers are teaching the Japanese soldiers what they learned there.

Along with showing the Japanese how the U.S. Army infantry operates, the Oregon National Guard Soldiers are also learning Japanese tactics during Orient Shield 2007.

OS SRM 3: The soldiers learned that there are several differences and similarities between how the Japanese and United States army's operate ranges during the short range marksmanship course Oct. 17 and 18.
