Oregon National Guard to participate in dedication of Vancouver baseball field

The Oregon National Guard will take part in a formal dedication ceremony at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007 for the Columbia River Miracle League's baseball park in Vancouver, Wash.

The baseball diamond, located at the Harmony Sports Complex in east Vancouver, has been upgraded to provide full access to children and adults with disabilities. The upgrades include wheelchair ramps and sidewalks, hand rails, and 16 handicapped parking stalls. The playing surface was also upgraded with Astoria Clay.

Local area businesses contributed funding and building materials for the project, with the Oregon Army National Guard's Innovative Readiness Training Program donating the use of heavy equipment, building materials and the labor force. Soldiers began working on the project during the last week of August.

The Oregon Guard's IRT program allows Soldiers to gain valuable field experience while helping out local communities. Many Guardsmen work full-time in the local construction industry, and several have deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, where they have taken part in rebuilding war-torn communities overseas.

The Columbia River Miracle League is a Vancouver, Wash.-based baseball league for children and adults with disabilities. They hope to make the Harmony Sports Complex their new home. While construction at the site is completed, games are scheduled at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the David Douglas Park, located just off Garrison Square and Mill Plain in Vancouver.
