Citizen Soldier to receive Purple Heart and other awards for service in Iraq
On Thursday, September 13, 2007 at 10 a.m., Staff Sgt. Tim L. McCrary will be honored in a ceremony at the Withycombe Armory in Clackamas, Ore. Media representatives are encouraged to attend.
Presentation of the Purple Heart will be made by Brig. Gen. Charles Yriarte, Commander of 82 Brigade Troop Command. He will also be receiving the Army Reserve Components Achievement Award (third award), Combat Action Badge and the Oregon Faithful Service Award (second award).
Also attending will Be Larry Deibert, THe Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for Oregon.
The Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal is awarded for exemplary behavior, efficiency, and fidelity while serving as a member of an Army National Guard or Army Reserve Troop Program Unit for each four year period since 3 March 1972. Effective 28 March 1995, the period of qualifying service for the award was reduced from four years to three years; however, this change was not retroactive. Service must have been consecutive and service performed in the Reserve Component of the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard may not be credited for award of this medal. The member must have exhibited honest and faithful service in accordance with the standards of conduct, courage and duty required by law and customs of the service of a member of the same grade as the individual to whom the standard is being applied. A member must be recommended for the award by his/her unit commander.
(1) The requirements for award of the CAB are Branch and MOS immaterial. Assignment to a Combat Arms unit or a unit organized to conduct close or offensive combat operations, or performing offensive combat operations is not required to qualify for the CAB. However, it is not intended to award all soldiers who serve in a combat zone or imminent danger area.
McCrary was injured on August 31, 2005 while serving with G Troop, 116 Brigade Combat Team south of Kirkuik. G Troop is based out of Redmond, Ore.
He was the driver in the Gunnery Commanders HMMWV when they impacted an roadside bomb (IED). The resulting explosion caused shrapnel to break through the window and a large piece entered his back traveling under his body armor hitting his spinal cord.
Prior to his deployment, McCrary worked as a traffic signal technician for the City of Beaverton. He and his wife live Nancy live in the City of Beaverton.
