Memorial and Funeral Services for Staff Sgt. Tane Baum set for Oct. 6
The family of Staff Sgt. Tane Baum has scheduled public memorial and funeral services for Oct. 6. A memorial will take place at 10:30 a.m. at the Army Aviation Support Facility #2 at the Pendleton airport followed by funeral services at Olney Cemetery at noon. A private reception will follow the funeral service.
Baum, 30, was killed in Deh Chopan, Afghanistan on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005 when the CH-47 Chinook helicopter he was in crashed. The aircrew was returning from a mission in support of ongoing operations at the time of the crash. An investigation is underway into the cause of the crash. He was promoted posthumously.
The following biographical information was provided by his family:
"Baum was born May 17, 1975 to Brenda (Kuhlmann) Davis and Danny R. Baum in Pendleton Ore. His family extended to his stepfather Gary Davis, and stepmother Ruth Marie Baum. He has one older brother, two younger brothers and one younger sister.
"He went to school in Pendleton and Athena. Active in soccer, cross country, basketball and he loved to ride his bike as a younger boy. He graduated from Weston-McEwen High School in 1993.
"He met his wife Tina May Broncheau while still in his senior year of high school. He worked at Hill Meat Co., Fleetwood, EOFF. Joining the Army National Guard in December 1995, he chose a career in aviation, specifically with the CH-47s.
"He married Tina June 21 1997 after he returned from training, and was hired full time at the Army Aviation Support Facility in Pendleton. He became a Sergeant in March 2000. He crewed on the CH-47's, and though he was known to be afraid of heights, he loved to see the country below.
"He was involved in a major rescue mission on Mt. Adams in August 2004. He crewed for fire seasons and was on various missions for the State of Oregon. Tane and Tina were blessed with their first son, Dyllan Kristopher on March 5, 1999. Their younger son Caelan Shane, was born August 16, 2001. He was extremely proud of his sons, and enjoyed spending as much time with them as possible.
"He loved his family more than anything. He loved hunting with his brother, grandfather, and friends every October. He was active and liked to stay in good physical health. He loved riding motorcycles and it was his plan to buy one, and possibly go to school to learn how to be a motorcycle mechanic, when he returned from active duty.
"He was known to be very kind and happy. He was a shy personal man but always able to make friends. His family and friends are proud and supportive of his accomplishments.
"He deployed with D Company, 113 Aviation to Kandahar, Afghanistan in March 2005. He was able to come home for his two weeks leave in August. He enjoyed a trip to the Portland Zoo with his wife and boys, and spent precious time with his extended family before he was sent back to Afghanistan. He will be missed for his light, his smile and his love."
