The Brandywine Zoo welcomed its newest resident, a three year old Siberian tiger named Zhanna (pronounced ZAN-ah), who arrived today from the St. Louis Zoo. Zhanna will be off exhibit and in quarantine for approximately two weeks, to enable her to get used to her new environment and bond with her zoo keepers. [more]

The small five-hive apiary maintained at the Sussex Community Corrections Center (SCCC) in Georgetown has done an excellent job of keeping bees on site to increase crop production at the facility’s farm, but it has also yielded an additional bonus – a quantity of honey sufficient enough to require harvesting. Tue, 28 Jun 2011 - DNREC Division of Fish and Wildlife announces 2011-2012 hunting license availability, new phone and online registration
With 2011-2012 Delaware hunting licenses becoming available on July 1, the Division of Fish and Wildlife wants to make hunters and landowners aware of a new toll-free phone number and website address to access the hunter registration system. This phone and internet system is required to register deer and obtain a Harvest Information Program (HIP) Number, a License Exempt Number (LEN) and a Snow Goose Conservation Order Permit Number. Tue, 28 Jun 2011 - DNREC seeking volunteer birdwatchers to report sightings of wild turkeys for 2011 survey
The DNREC Division of Fish and Wildlife is looking for volunteer birdwatchers to assist the Division with its 2nd annual productivity survey on the location and number of wild turkeys in Delaware. This data will help biologists track the health, distribution and reproductive success of the state’s wild turkeys with the goal of ensuring a sustainable harvest of this treasured game species. Tue, 28 Jun 2011 - DNREC Division of Fish and Wildlife announces results from 25th Annual Youth Fishing Tournament
When the day was done, 14-year-old Dustin Waller of Georgetown came out as overall statewide winner, as well as the Sussex County winner, with fish weighing in at a total of 4.25 pounds. The biggest fish of the day, a largemouth bass weighing 3.17 pounds, was caught in Kent County by 14-year-old Ronald Degano of Magnolia, who also took first place in his age group. The overall winner for New Castle County was 12-year-old Emma Griffith of Middletown with 2.81 pounds of fish. [more]

In observance of it, Delaware’s Mosquito Control Section will distribute door hanger information in neighborhoods this week to educate citizens about mosquitoes – the growing population of Asian tiger mosquitoes in particular – and the precautions everyone can take to avoid or reduce bites and eliminate backyard breeding habitat. Thu, 16 Jun 2011 - DMV Cracks Down on Toll Violators / Division Launches Program to Collect Delinquent Tolls
Dover -- As the summer travel season moves forward, the Department of Transportation's (DelDOT) Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the division in charge of toll operations and oversight of violations, is announcing new efforts aimed at collecting money that is owed by Route 1 and I-95 toll violators. Nearly $8 million is owed by both in-state and out-of-state toll violators in an equal split. A first round of notices has been mailed out to approximately 400 violators who account for almost $600,000 in violations. [more]

Selbyville -- In response to visitors, residents and business owners, who were concerned about traffic delays due to construction of the Route 54 Improvement Project, the Department of Transportation (DelDOT) announces that it has required the contractor to change their work schedule effective Friday, June 17, 2011. The contractor, Mumford & Miller, will be permitted to utilize lane closures from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursdays only, with no lane closures permitted on Fridays during the summer season. Dover -- The Delaware Department of Transportation's (DelDOT) Division of Motor Vehicles' (DMV) Greater Wilmington offices located at 2230 Hessler Boulevard, New Castle, will be closed for the remainder of today (June 14) due to damage done overnight to fiber optic lines near the facility. The facility will reopen for business tomorrow (June 15). "The damage has cut all computer and phone links to the building," said DMV Director Jennifer Cohan. [more]
