First Citizens' Scrap Tire Drop-Off Day a Sussex County Success
 The Division of Air & Waste Management's Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Branch’s (SHWMB) Scrap Tire Control & Cleanup Program, in partnership with the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) and Independent Disposal Services (IDS), held the first Citizens' Scrap Tire Drop-Off Day. Scrap tires were collected at DSWA’s Route 5 Transfer Station in Sussex County. Despite a rainy start to the day, approximately 200 vehicles brought a total of 1,600 passenger vehicle tires (20 tons) to be recycled.

now waving a flag of
environmental triumph
Boaters passing Fox Point State Park on the Delaware River might notice three flags snapping in the wind: America's familiar stars and stripes and Delaware’s colonial blue, and a third flag with a woven fox logo. Few of the bypassers may appreciate, however, the multiple meanings of the flags marking a spot where new land was created; where an environmental mistake was recognized and amended; and where neighborhood activism led to informed governmental action.
