| Overview |

The Traffic - Roadway Section administers the Highway Safety Program to encourage engineering improvements that address identified safety needs. The Oregon Transportation Commission (OTC) has allocated approximately $28 to 29 million dollars a year to ODOT's Primary Infrastructure Safety Program for 2006 through 2009. Of the total amount, approximately $14 million per year is from the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), and another $1.1 million (approximately) is available for High Risk Rural Roads (HR3), both federally-funded programs. The remaining funds are made up of eligible federal funds or state funds, which are used to fund the Safety Investment Program (SIP). The mission of the Safety Program at ODOT is to carry out safety improvement projects to achieve a significant reduction in traffic fatalities and serious injuries.

ODOT Highway Safety funds can be used to address safety needs identified on any public road. Projects funded include, but are not limited to:

- Fixed Object Removal
- Guardrail or Median Barrier
- Installation or Improvement Impact Attenuation
- Delineation
- Signal Priority Preemption
- Signal Installation or Improvement
- Pavement Markings
- Illumination
- Pavement Marking
- Pedestrian Paths
- Bicycle Lanes
- Rockfall Correction
- Grade Separation
- Slope Flattening
- Road safety audits
