Increased Brand Inspection Fee is in effect
The per-head Brand Inspection Fee is now $1.00. Higher program expenditures are the primary cause for the need to increase the fee. Because expenses for 2008 were much higher than anticipated, the program needs additional revenue now to cover future expenses. Without additional revenue this year the program is likely to have a negative cash balance by 2009-2010. A negative cash balance may trigger legislative action that could seriously compromise the program.
ODA staff will continue to evaluate long term funding and program activities. During the last legislative session, the department promised both industry and the legislature that discussions between interested parties will be a priority. As the brand program evolves and industry priorities arise, reassessment of the program is necessary.
