Major Earthquake Safety Program Work to Begin

As part of our ongoing system-wide Earthquake Safety Program, construction work is beginning in stations and other patron areas. Over the next five years, you will encounter work at various locations throughout the BART system. We appreciate your patience during this work, and will attempt to minimize construction-related noise, dust, and inconvenience. We anticipate completion of all earthquake upgrades by 2013. The first major work visible to the public will be upgrades to the Lake Merritt and MacArthur BART stations, in addition to San Francisco’s Muni Church Street Station, which is owned by BART. Upgrades will occur at 16 more BART stations and along more than 22 miles of BART tracks. Work will begin in groups as follows:

Work Expected to Begin in 2008:

  • Lake Merritt, MacArthur and Muni Church Street stations
  • Rockridge Station and aerial (elevated) structures in North Oakland
  • West Oakland Station
  • Parking garages at Daly City, El Cerrito del Norte, Concord, Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek and Hayward stations

Work Expected to Begin in 2009:

  • Daly City Station
  • Fruitvale, Coliseum, San Leandro, Bay Fair, Hayward, South Hayward and Fremont stations
  • Orinda, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Concord, El Cerrito Plaza and El Cerrito del Norte stations
  • Aerial structures throughout the BART system
  • Train maintenance yards and shops
  • Other systems and equipment

The extent, hours and work will vary at each location. Please watch for future updates with more details.

As always, safety is BART’s top priority.  Our aim is to strengthen BART as quickly as possible, while maintaining BART service.  We thank you again for your patience and cooperation.

Measure AA: BART Earthquake Safety Bond

On November 2, 2004 voters in Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco Counties approved Measure AA, the BART Earthquake Safety Bond. Measure AA will fund up to $980 million of the $1.3 billion project budget to strengthen the original BART system, protect public safety, return BART service quickly and avoid gridlock after a major earthquake. The bonds will be paid from proceeds of property tax estimated to average $7.04 annually per $100,000 of assessed value.
