Information & Assistance Services
Information, referral and assistance services are provided either in person, on the phone or on-line to individuals to assist them to understand and navigate the developmental disability service system. Some programs also mail out fliers and newsletters. Other programs organize support groups.
Community Outreach Team
Staff provide culturally relevant services and supports to families from diverse
communities, including African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latin American
communities and other communities as identified, as they navigate the developmental
disabilities service system on behalf of their family member. Staff encourages
individuals with developmental disabilities and their families to participate
on advisory boards and committees to ensure they have a voice within the developmental
disability system. Information and training is provided to organizations in
the community to provide culturally appropriate services and practices to individuals
and families from communities of color.
For more information about these services, visit the Arc of King County web site for the Ethnic Outreach Program (external) or talk with an Ethnic Outreach Family Advocate by calling 206-364-4645.
Parent-to-Parent
Parent-to-Parent provides information, resources, training, advocacy skill development
and emotional support to families of children with developmental disabilities.
Parent volunteers receive training, are encouraged to participate in their local
community and are matched with other parents. Through these efforts parents
have a better understanding of their child's disability and the emotional impact
to the family. There are regularly scheduled meetings, internet support groups
and family get-togethers. The program ensures culturally relevant service acquisition
and support for families from communities of color who face unique challenges
when their child has a disability.
For more information about these services, vist the Arc of King County web site for the Parent to Parent Support Program or contact a specialist from Arc at e-mail or 206-364-8384.
