His Excellency Dr. Abdul Jabbar Sabit, attorney general of Afghanistan, spoke at USIP on June 25. He discussed corruption, the illegal drug trade, insecurity and impunity for past and current crimes, among other themes.
Appointed Attorney General in August 2006, Sabit previously served as a legal advisor to the Afghan Ministry of Interior. Dr. Sabit graduated from Kabul University's Faculty of Law, and received a masters degree in law and economics in the United States.
Moderator Alex Thier commented, "Dr. Sabit spoke very powerfully about the challenge the Afghan government faces in trying to rein in impunity throughout the country. He highlighted the fact that powerful militia commanders, even some governors appointed by the Karzai government, were above the law and insisted that in order for Afghanistan to stabilize, the situation must change."
