Training

The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is offering a series of training opportunities in “Hazardous Waste Basics” and “Managing Common Waste: Used Oil, Batteries, Light Tubes, etc.” Classes are open to all; however, space is limited in some locations. Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Find out where the next collection event for conditionally exempt generator and pesticide waste collection event is.

Solid Waste Section

Oregon Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Events

All non-DEQ events are limited to customers/residents of the sponsor's area. Most HHW events accept Conditionally Exempt Generator (CEG) waste, but charge for disposal. Please call the local contact to confirm and get prices. For HHW collection opportunities in the Portland Metro area, call 503-234-3000.

UST System Operator Training Program

The requirements for the training of UST system operators may be found in Oregon Administrative Rule 340-150-0200. Each UST facility in Oregon that dispenses a regulated substance from an UST to a motor vehicle or container must employ trained personnel who can properly operate and maintain the UST system. One of the options for meeting the training requirement is to receive training from a local training vendor. Listed below is the current training schedule.

Alternatively, you may take the International Code Council's (ICC) national UST System Operator examination administered by LaserGrade or Promissor, professional testing companies. Upon successfully passing the examination, submit a copy of your score report, along with your phone number, to:

Oregon DEQ - Land Quality Division
Attn: Mitch Scheel
811 SW Sixth Avenue
Portland, OR 97204

DEQ will then send you a copy of the training manual that covers Oregon-specific UST rules and regulations. After submitting an affidavit stating that you have read and understood the manual, you would then be in compliance with the training requirement.

If you choose to take the national operator test, contact ICC at 1-888-422-7233 ext 33823 to request a free Candidate Bulletin.

The cost to take the examination is $75. Please contact Mitch Scheel at 503-229-6704, toll-free in Oregon at 1-800-742-7878, .
