A variety of graphics showing observed data is shown in the table below.
The graphics are generated automatically and aren't always quality controlled
before they are posted here. (Click the thumbnail for a larger view.)
Much of the data includes radar estimates. Estimates are computed using
formulas which can vary from radar to radar or from day to day. A table
showing the most recent settings from each area radar can be found on
our "Z/R Relationships" page.
The table below contains the following information:
Data |
Multi-sensor |
Radar-Only |
Gage-Only |
Latest 1-hr Precipitation Accumulation
|
|
|
|
These show the most recent 1-hr precipitation accumulation as
computed from Multi-sensor Precipitation Estimation (MPE) software.
This software attempts to give a more accurate assessment of the
"real" precipitation by merging the horizontal detail
of the 88-D network with the assumed accuracy of the rain gage network.
The radar rings shown extend 230 km outward from the radar site
to show the extent of radar coverage. Only those radars used
in the generation of this product are shown. Blue rings mean that the radar is operating
properly, but had detected no accumulated precipitation for the
hour. Green rings mean the radar contributed at
least some estimated precip to the product. Red
rings indicate that the radar data was not available for this hour.
This product is updated hourly and usually lags a half an hour
behind, e.g., precipitation for the hour ending at 10AM will generally
be available by 10:30AM. This depends on system load and areal
extent of the precipitation.

Accumulated Precipitation Since Previous Synoptic Hour
|
|
|
|
These show the most recent N-hr precipitation accumulation
as computed from Multi-sensor Precipitation Estimation (MPE) software.
(See above.) N represents the number of hours since
the most recent synoptic hour (7 and 1 AM and PM EST, or 8 and 2
AM and PM EDT). These products are updated hourly and lags
about a half hour behind, e.g., precip ending at 10AM will generally
be available by 10:30AM.
|
Accumulated Precipitation
Since 7AM EST (8AM EDT)
|
|
|
|
These show the most recent N-hr precipitation accumulation
as computed from Multi-sensor Precipitation Estimation (MPE) software.
(See above.) N represents the number of hours since
7AM EST (8AM EDT). These products are updated hourly and lags
about a half hour behind, e.g., precip ending at 10AM will generally
be available by 10:30AM. Previous hours of Multi-sensor Precipitation
Estimation (MPE) information that have been edited will be reflected
in this product when the next hourly iteration occurs.

Basin Average (computed) 24-hr Precipitation
|
|
n/a
|
n/a
|
It shows the most recent 24-hr gridded precipitation accumulation ending
at 12Z as computed from Multi-sensor Precipitation Estimation (MPE)
software. Then, gridded values are averaged over each of the 700+ sub-basins.
This product is usually updated by 19Z. The data used to generate
this product are retrieved from the CRWRRMxxx products
that are sent out from the RFC. They are based on hourly multi-sensor precipitation grids summed to 24 hours (see 24-hr 12Z precip
above). This is what is used in the river model as "observed"
precipitation (Computed Mean Areal Precip). |
River Gauge Plot
|
|
It shows color-coded dots representing river status categories
at that point, e.g., whether the stage at that point is in flood,
below flood but high in its banks, or is at low or normal flow,
etc. Black dots mean that the site is missing some criteria, such
as Action Stage or Flood Stage, such that it cannot be determined
what color the dot should be. Most of these black-dotted sites are
those used for modeling only and no official flood stage (etc.)
has ever been established.
