Weldasearch® via CSA

Interested in Titanium Aluminide's electron-beam weldability? Consult the new library database, Weldasearch®.

Weldasearch® has short abstracts of articles on welding, joining, and allied technologies. Using the LinkSeeker icon () you can link to the full-text of the articles when it is available.

The database aims to be a comprehensive record of appropriate worldwide literature published since 1966. Every aspect of welding and allied processes is covered including design, materials science, fatigue and fracture mechanics, equipment for joining and cutting processes, corrosion, surfacing, microjoining, metallurgy and materials science, quality control, inspection, non-destructive testing, health and safety, commercial applications, market statistics, and news of the industry.

Weldasearch® has comprehensive coverage of all key industry sectors including aerospace, automotive, electronics, shipbuilding, fabrication of bridges, pipelines, offshore structures and pressure vessels, fabrication of power generation, nuclear and process plants, robotics and automation, repair and maintenance. Processes of welding, brazing and soldering, microjoining, diffusion bonding, thermal cutting, surfacing and hardfacing, thermal spraying are covered.

Publication types covered by this database include: books; conferences; journal articles; patents; reports; software and standards. This database will be of potential relevance to users in most engineering disciplines.

The LANL Research Library has brought you this database and more via the CSA (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts) search interface. CSA has an alert feature that is very easy to use and would be excellent for keeping up-to-date on the newest publications in these areas. Visit CSA to see the other files available for searching.

Please send your comments to the Chemistry team.

Corrosion Abstracts via CSA

Another new database to try from CSA's offerings is Corrosion Abstracts (1980-current). International sources of literature for this database are scanned and abstracted in the areas of general corrosion, testing, corrosion characteristics, preventive measures, materials construction and performance, and equipment for many industries.

Why use Corrosion Abstracts? Here are a few reasons why:

  • To access information to solve corrosion problems found within a specific industry such as the petroleum industry, pipeline industry, water/waste industry, coatings and linings industry, transportation industry, pulp and paper industry, power industry, refining industry, and the corrosion testing and monitoring industry
  • To track the latest corrosion science and engineering trends and the technology used to prevent and control corrosion
  • To solve your corrosion problems by reviewing the documented experience of corrosion engineers and scientists from around the world
  • To stay current on corrosion industry standards and guidelines for preventing and controlling corrosion (remember, CSA has an Alerting feature)
  • To search for information on a particular corrosion phenomenon (for example, stress-corrosion cracking, hydrogen embrittlement, galvanic corrosion)
  • To research corrosion tendencies of specific materials

As with all CSA databases, the LANL Research Library has provided links to full-text articles to which the library subscribes and other services via the LinkSeeker icon

Please send your comments to the Chemistry team.

SciSearch® Plus call for testers

An expanded database and new features are being built into a new interface to be called SciSearch® Plus from the LANL Research Library. SciSearch® at LANL and Social SciSearch® at LANL can be searched together with a single search. The much-requested SciSearch backfiles, going back to 1954, are included. Search results are de-duped and can be sorted in different ways. Results can be printed, e-mailed, or downloaded. Also, this interface offers a streamlined way to automatically import records into EndNote. You can log in to set personal search preferences, such as dates and limits to apply to your searches, and to create Alerts for weekly notification of new articles of interest. Bibliographies are enhanced with linking to articles covered in SciSearch Plus. Cited searching has been enhanced with new ways to search and to combine cited counts, and you can browse all cited authors.

We will be doing beta testing of this new interface with library users next month. If you would like to participate in testing, please send your name to rl-testing@lanl.gov.

Research Library forms Chemistry/Materials Science Research Committee

The Library has formed a Chemistry/Materials Science advisory group comprised of Laboratory scientists. To ensure representation of research efforts at the Laboratory, the 15-member committee is drawn from 11 Groups in 5 different Divisions. Their charge is to advise Library staff on collections, products, and services to support changing research directions in the fields of chemistry and materials science. Members also serve as a conduit for getting information about library collections, products, and services to the Laboratory research community. The Committee meets once quarterly and communicates through e-mail as needed.

The Library thanks the Committee members for their efforts and greatly values their input.

Update on the Research Library roofing project and other construction

The Oppenheimer Study Center, which houses the Research Library, is undergoing a project to replace the roof of the building, to remedy long-standing problems with our roof. As of November 1 the project is about 2/3 done, and the contractor is hoping to be done by Thanksgiving. The Library remains open, maintaining its normal hours of operation, with some increased noise and smell of asphalt during parts of the project. Any questions or concerns regarding this project can be directed to Charles Harviar, Construction Project Manager at 667-4938 charvier@lanl.gov or Victor Turner, Project Leader at 667-6777 or victort@lanl.gov.

Anyone in vicinity of the Study Center lately will have noticed the fencing which has appeared recently in the area between the Study Center and the Otowi building. This is an unrelated project to improve the appearance and usability of the area between Otowi, the Study Center, and the Admin Building. It involves creating sidewalks, vehicle barriers, and planters, removing streets, and moving flagpoles and lights, and is expected to last a month or so. Pedestrian routes around this construction area will change several times, so please be careful approaching the Library.

Search engines: Teoma introduces advanced search syntax and larger database

The size of the Teoma database has been increased 60% to about 350 million pages with more enlargements on the way. In addition to the larger database, several advanced searching options are now available. Here's a review.

1) Ability to Limit By Language
Here's the Syntax to add to your search:
lang:fr = French
lang:es = Spanish
lang:it = Italian
lang:no = Norwegian
lang:da = Danish
lang:pt = Portuguese
lang:de = German
lang:nl = Dutch

2) More Syntax - Specify that your search term appear in a specific place by prefacing it with:
Site:
Intext:
Inurl:
Intitle:

3) Dynamic Description -- in other words, your search terms appear in context.
