Activity Center Web site

In support of employee's efforts to improve or maintain their health, King County maintains a few employee Activity Centers.  These centers are not full service gyms and are used by employees on their own time, at their own risk.

Activity Center in the Chinook Building

The Activity Center in the Chinook Building is on Level A in the northeast corner of the building.  The center includes bicycle storage, men’s and women’s shower rooms, lockers, a group exercise room and an equipment room.

Access

The facility is available to all King County employees with valid King County ID card.  The facility is not available for friends, family members, guests, or non-King County employees.

To access the Activity Center, enter the Chinook Building from the door on Jefferson.  There is a key card reader to the left of the glass door.  This door opens into the bike storage and shower rooms.  These areas are accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  To access the group exercise and equipment rooms, use the key card reader to the left of the door in the south east corner of the bike storage room (near the women’s shower room).  The north elevator from the Chinook lobby, across the hall from the cash machine, also goes to Level A, opening into the bike storage room.  You’ll need to swipe your King County ID card on the card reader before pushing the Level A button.

Lockers

There are 54 day-use lockers in the bike storage room on the north wall.  There are 24 short-term (3 hour max) use lockers in each of the men’s and women’s shower rooms.  These are intended to be used by people who are walking or running during break-times or using the group exercise or equipment rooms.  All lockers are on a first come, first served basis.

At this time, there are no long term lockers.  We have received many requests for long-term lockers.  The feasibility of designating some lockers for long-term use is being examined. In the meantime, all lockers should be cleaned out and locks removed by 10 p.m. each night.

Items left in lockers after 10 p.m. may be removed by Facilities Management.  Any unsanitary or unclean items will be immediately discarded.  Other items will be tagged and taken to Lost and Found.  They will be kept for 30 days then donated or discarded. Call Lost and Found at 206-296-0104 to claim gear.

Towels should not be left overnight and will be discarded.

Bicycles

The Activity Center contains a bicycle storage area. Bicyclists should enter the building through the door on Jefferson Street.  Please walk your bike at all times while in the building.  Bicycle racks are available on a first come, first served basis.  Bikes should not be left for longer than 3 days.  Abandoned bikes will be tagged by Facilities Management and later removed to Lost and Found.  Bike locks will be damaged during removal.

In case of an emergency, bikes or gear may be left in the bike storage room overnight.  In this case, the employee must inform King County Security by calling 206-296-5000 prior to 10 p.m.

Shower Rooms

Men’s and Women’s shower rooms are located off the bike storage room.  Access is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through the bike storage room.  These rooms are for King County employee use only.  Personal items should not be left in the shower rooms.  Items left overnight are subject to removal.

Lockers in the shower rooms are short-term use only – these are intended for users of the Activity Center while using the group exercise room or equipment or while walking or running during breaks.  Items should not be left longer than three hours.  Any abandoned items will be taken to Lost and Found by King County Security.  They will be tagged and kept for 30 days, then donated or discarded.  Any unsanitary or unclean items will be immediately discarded.  Contact 206-296-0104 for Lost and Found.  For sanitary reasons, it is recommended that users of the showers wear shower shoes or flip flops.

Bulletin Board and Map Wall

The north wall of the bike storage room holds a community bulletin board, walking maps from the Chinook, bike route guides and various trail maps.  Please return the laminated walking maps so that others may use them. Other materials are free for your use and information. There is also a bulletin board in the Equipment Room on the west wall.  King County employees should feel free to post information that may be of interest to other employees.  However, employees may not post flyers, business cards or other advertisements for any vendor.

The group exercise room will be closed on all King County observed holidays. The group exercise room may be reserved for groups of employees participating in an instructor led class.  Priority will be given to classes funded by the Healthy Workplace Funding Initiative and groups of 10 or more.  The room can be reserved up to three months in advance.  If a group is not regularly using the room for the time for which they are scheduled, they may be asked to forfeit their reservation.

Employees who wish to lead classes for other employees may do so using the group exercise room. Employees may lead classes on
