Eat Smart King County, Move More

Move More Program – Fact Sheet

What is Move More?
Move More
is a King County program designed to educate, encourage and empower employees and their families to make physical activity a part of each day.

Why Move More?
People of all ages can benefit from regular physical activity. Research shows that regular physical activity can help prevent chronic disease and reduce numerous health risks including stroke, colon cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure. Physical activity and exercise can also be used to treat depression and stress, and can help relieve the pain of arthritis. The Centers for Disease Control states that physical activity doesn’t need to be strenuous to be healthful; moderate-intensity physical activity, such as 30 minutes of brisk walking five or more times a week can be beneficial.

Why Move More at King County?
King County is focusing on employee health and wellbeing to improve health among employees and families and reduce overall health care costs. Because we spend so much time at work, workplace programs can be particularly effective in helping people include physical activity into their daily routines.

What are the 2006 goals of Move More?
The goals are to:

  • Increase awareness of what defines physical activity
  • Increase awareness of the relationship between physical activity and health
  • Increase awareness of the resources, tools and information available to include physical activity every day
  • Increase awareness of the benefits of stair use

How is the county invovled in helping me Move More ?
King County will provide information and education through the Health Matters newsletter, the focus on employees web site, worksite posters, information toolkits for managers and through a County-wide team focused competitive challenge to eat more fruits and vegetables and participate in physical activity. In addition, the County is working on identifying local gyms who will offer a discount to King County employees and families. Specific work-site programs to Move More can be funded through the Healthy Worksite Funding Initiative. Ask your manager for more information.

Do I need to participate in Move More?
No – the Move More program is being provided as an educational program for King County employees and their families.
