addition to the 256 bases of flanking cellular DNA shown below,
approximately 2500 bases of 3' flanking material were determined,
but the flanking primate DNA is not presented here. Author address:

Medical School Southborough MA 01772. SIV MAC239 was isolated from
Macaca mulatta individual Mm239-82, which died of an AIDS-like
illness 85 days after it was inoculated with filtered cell-free
plasma from another macaque, Mm61-82, which had in turn been
inoculated with minced pooled blood from 3 of the 7 macaques which
were inoculated with minced lymphoma tissue from Mm251-79. Mm251-79
had died with lymphoma 26 months after inoculation with minced
lymphoma tissue from an un-named macaque (R. Hunt et al Proc. Natl.
Acad. Sci. USA 80: 5085 (1983)). Thus the history of the MAC239
virus is quite well known, and the sequences of other isolates from
this lineage, notably MAC251 have also been determined. The nef
coding region of this isolate has an in-frame stop codon after 92aa
predicting a truncated product of only 10kD.
