Back Issues of The Capitol - Speaker Pelosi's Newsletter for the Asian American and Pacific Islander Community
The Capitol - October 2008
Dear Friends:
Members of Congress are continuing the bipartisan efforts of the past two weeks to pass an improved financial rescue bill to help stabilize our financial system and protect the American taxpayer. We are committed to working with the Administration to enact a bipartisan bill without further delay.
Since the original proposal by President Bush and Treasury Secretary Paulson, we reached bipartisan agreement on key additions, including strong measures to protect taxpayers from the costs of this program; to impose tough accountability on Wall Street through strong oversight and transparency; to limit excessive executive compensation and golden parachutes; to reduce home foreclosures to help families remain in their homes; and to sequence the funding of the program to ensure appropriate cost controls and independent reviews.

Dear Friends:
In June, I met with leaders of the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA) to discuss issues critical to the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. The Capitol - May 2008
Dear Friends:
Last month, Americans across this great nation honored our veterans and solemnly remembered our fallen heroes on Memorial Day. In the New Direction Congress, we treat every day as if it were Memorial Day - our thoughts and prayers are with our troops in harm's way.
We have an obligation to care for and honor America's servicemen and women, their families, and our veterans for their bravery and sacrifice. The new Democratic-led Congress is keeping our promises to America's veterans and military - including the more than 321,000 veterans of AAPI descent and the more than 48,000 AAPI men and women who have served their country in Afghanistan and Iraq since 2001.

Wherever there was injustice or oppression, he used his expertise and moral authority to put the United States on the side of justice and human rights.
