Holtgeerts confirmed as Director of King County's Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention

Reed Holtgeerts, a 29-year veteran of King County corrections, was confirmed today as the Director of the Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention. Executive Ron Sims named him Acting Director in December 2004. He was most recently Deputy Director of the department that oversees the second largest jail population in the state.

"Reed’s in-depth knowledge of the corrections field and strong management skills make him uniquely qualified to lead the department," said Sims. "Reed has an impressive track record of working effectively with staff to put in place innovative practices that are reducing jail costs."

Holtgeerts was a leader in the opening of the Regional Justice Center (RJC) Detention Facility in 1997 and assisted in building a national model for operating a direct supervision detention facility. In 2001, Holtgeerts graduated from the National Institute of Corrections Executive Excellence Program.

"After many years of service to the department, it is an honor and privilege to accept the position of director," said Holtgeerts. "The department has outstanding employees and one of the top corrections management teams in the country. Together we will continue to be a leader in this region for corrections services."

Another hallmark of Holtgeert's approach is success through partnerships. Throughout his tenure at the Regional Justice Center, he built strong relationships with law enforcement, business groups, and city officials in Kent and South King County.

"Reed has proven to be an asset in the short time that he has been the interim director. He has been an asset to the law enforcement community of King County," said King County Sheriff Sue Rahr.

Reed embarked on his career with the department as a Corrections Officer in 1976. He was subsequently promoted to positions of Corrections Sergeant, Lieutenant/Captain, Corrections Major, Facility Commander at the Regional Justice Center and Deputy Director.

The King County Council voted unanimously to approve Holtgeerts appointment today.
