Ready, set, VOTE!

Ballots in the mail for all voters in Seattle and absentee voters in Highline, Skykomish school districts

Today more than 365,000 ballots for the March 13 election will be mailed to voters in three jurisdictions in King County: all voters in the City of Seattle, and absentee voters in the Highline and Skykomish school districts. For Seattle, it will be the city’s first all-mail ballot measure. In the other jurisdictions, voters will cast ballots both at polling places as well as by absentee ballot.

A majority of Seattle voters, about 62 percent, are registered as permanent absentee voters and between 70 to 80 percent of voters in any given election choose to vote by mail. For them, this special election will be no different than previous elections. For the 132,000 poll voters, the viaduct advisory ballot will mean they must cast a ballot through the mail or drop it off at one of five ballot drop-off locations.

Here are reminders for first-time absentee voters to help make sure their ballot is processed quickly:

  1. Carefully review the instructions on your ballot. Please avoid the temptation to write, sign or leave stray marks on your ballot. This slows the tabulation process and may disqualify your ballot from being counted.

  2. Seal your ballot first in the security envelope and then seal both in the return envelope. Remember to sign the oath on the return envelope. To verify your identity, this signature will be compared to the signature we have on file for similarity.

  3. Make sure to return your reply envelope postmarked on or before March 13. Starting March 8, In Seattle, there will be five staffed ballot drop-off locations, where people can return their ballots if they choose, for the list of locations, please visit http://www.metrokc.gov/elections/200703/dropofflocations.asp.

  4. In-person accessible voting, using an accessible voting unit will be available from Feb. 21 until March 13 at King County Elections’ downtown Seattle office at 500 Fourth Ave, Room 553, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays through March 13.

Poll voters in the Highline and Skykomish school districts, are reminded to visit their polling place on Election Day, March 13, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. to vote on important school district levies.

Voters who do not receive their absentee ballot by March 2 should contact King County Elections at 206-296-VOTE (8683).
