Hurricanes pose a serious challenge to the Southeast.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service facilities and trust resources in the southeast are frequent targets of hurricanes.

These damaging hurricanes increase wetlands loss and have a huge impact on barrier islands. Wetlands help absorb the impact of storm surges before they hit the levee system that protect cities around the Gulf of Mexico.

The high winds snap cavity trees home to endangered red-cockaded woodpeckers and blast way swaths of trees used by neotropical migrant songbirds on their perilous path to and from North America, Central America, and South America.

Beach erosion and high waves destroy endangered and threatened sea turtle nests.

The flooding and storm surges destroy roads, canals, water control structures, fences, visitor centers, support buildings, boat houses, maintenance sheds and offices vital to our operations.

Here are some recent examples of the major hurricanes that have hit our area.
