Large sparrow named after its reddish-brown colored wings and tail. Has a whitish
breast marked with triangular reddish spots merging into a larger central breast
spot. Head is a mixture of reddish-brown and gray. Sexes similar. Coloration
is extremely variable across North America. Migrates early and is seen only
during migrational periods and in small numbers. Prefers dense underbrush in
both coniferous and deciduous woodlands. Nests in western United States, northern
and western Canada, Alaska and Northwest Territories. Winters in the southern
and extreme western portions of the United States.
