Celebrate Earth Day with King County April 22 and discover that ‘it’s easy being green’

Learn how it's easy being green all year-round by participating in King County's fifth-annual Earth Day Expo on Tuesday, April 22, at Westlake Plaza, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Join King County Executive Ron Sims, Bert the Salmon, EcoConsumer Tom Watson, the Yard Talk Guys, and area school children at a downtown Seattle event celebrating the spirit of everyday green living.

Get tools, resources and discounts that will help you make easy environmental choices and be sure to check out the array of environmental entertainment and educational activities designed to promote environmental awareness for kids.

Visitors to King County's booth – "It's Easy Being Green – Let King County Show You How" – will learn easy ways to recycle, green-up your ride, volunteer for Earth-friendly activities, reduce your carbon footprint and make your home and garden more environmentally sound.

Scheduled activities include:

10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Children's activity corner: Kids ages 3-7 can create crafts designed to promote environmental awareness and learn fun ecological facts like how worms turn paper and food waste into a landscaping resources.

10:15 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.

Creatures of the Earth: An underground adventure of songs and stories Worms! Sowbugs! Centipedes! Up-close and personal! Join Lisa and friends in an adventure underground. Using songs, stories and demonstrations, participants will explore the creatures that live in your worm bin.

Those Amazing Changing Bugs: the magic of metamorphosis in song and dance! Ladybugs and butterflies and spiders, oh my! Join Lisa and friends in an exploration of how arthropods grow and change. Learn about the bugs and spiders in your garden through songs, stories and demonstration.

Ongoing activities:
Tour a "green" bus: Visitors can tour a Metro Transit buses that runs on a mixture of biodiesel and ultra low sulfur diesel fuel.

Meet Bert the Salmon: Say hello to the King County environmental mascot who stars in TV and radio public service announcements, attends community festivals and is a prominent feature in many Puget Sound-area school science curricula.

Yard Talk Q&A: Greg Rabourn and Doug Rice, the stars of the popular King County TV show, "Yard Talk," will be on-hand to answer common gardening and yard care questions and will help you learn how to "green-up your garden."

EcoConsumer Tom Watson: Providing tips on green living and sustainable purchases is Watson, manager of EcoConsumer program for the King County Solid Waste Division
