Art Around The World for ages 6-14 @ Erna Fergusson Library
Monthly on the last Friday of the month.  (no program in Nov or Dec)
Each month we create an art project that celebrates a different culture. This month we are celebrating Alaska.  Children are invited to learn about traditional Inuit (Eskimo) masks and then make a mask of their own.
Registration required. Call 888-8100 for details on this month's project. Registration begins the day after the previous month's program. Call early--space is limited.

All are welcome at our Summer Poetry Circle for a reading and discussion of poems by Santa Fe’s first poet Laureate, Arthur Sze, &  Jane Hirshfield. Join us as we compare and  contrast "The Silence"  from Sze’s The Redshifting Web and "The Room" from Hirshfield’s Given Sugar, Given Salt.  Put a hold on the books now (there are limited copies of  Arthur Sze’s books) or pick up copies of the poems at the Information Desk. Iris and the king  puppet “Iris Saves the Land of Black and White”--a puppet presentation by Laura Freeman and Heather Jarry.

Join Iris on her adventures as she journeys through the Land of Black and White. The land is ruled by a King who has banned all color due to a horrible coloring accident he had as a child. With the help of the audience, Iris helps the inhabitants of the land rediscover their true colors. Watch the Land of Black and White transform before your eyes. Will the King be convinced that colors are wonderful?... come and find out.

Exhibit:U.S. Constitution Week Exhibit

September 10 – 26, 2008 @ Special Collections Library, Main Reading Room  

The Zia Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution is exhibiting mementos of the revolutionary period, including a collection of hand gathered and molded original glass bottle sculptures commemorating the contributions of American women to our nation’s freedom. September 17th is the 221st anniversary of completion of the Constitution by the delegates to the Constitutional Convention.

 

 

Exhibit: Art, Politics and Public Works: New Mexico’s New Deal

September 16 through December 6, 2008 @ Special Collections Library

The Special Collections Library celebrates the 75th anniversary of the New Deal with an exhibit of Public Works of Art Project examples presented to the library in 1934.  We also display items documenting Albuquerque public works projects from our Works Progress Administration archive and contemporary 1930s political memorabilia from the Earl W. Grasser papers.

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 20, 4:00 pm.

Governor Tingley Talks About the New Deal 

Hear Dave Jackson as Clyde Tingley boasting of his accomplishments in saving Albuquerque from the Great Depression and creating the public works to assure its bright future. This program is made possible by the New Mexico Humanities Council through grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the New Mexico Office of Cultural Affairs.

Artist:  Ginnie Brown and Don Brown  

Ginnie specializes in Southwest landscapes, mission churches and New Mexico buildings. She works  in both oils and acrylics and has won numerous ribbons in local art shows. She has also illustrated several children's books.  

Don Brown does watercolor, acrylic and pencil drawings bringing the Southwest to life. He won the 2006 Purchase Award at the NM State Fair. He has a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Kansas City Art Institute.
