Commanding Officer

Captain Michael D. Hudson

Captain Michael D. HudsonCaptain Michael Hudson, a native of Hampton, Virginia, graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1980. Upon commissioning he was assigned as a Deck Watch Officer aboard CGC Reliance home ported in Yorktown, Virginia. In 1982 he was assigned as Commanding Officer, CGC Cape Gull home ported in Miami, Florida. Captain Hudson served as a duty officer in the Seventh Coast Guard District’s Command Center from 1984 until 1987. He then returned to sea as Executive Officer, CGC Sweetgum home ported in Mayport, Florida.

In 1989 he was selected for postgraduate training at The George Washington University. After receiving a Masters Degree in Public Administration, he was assigned to the Officer Management Branch at the Coast Guard Personnel Command in Washington, D.C.

Captain Hudson was assigned as Commanding Officer, CGC Laurel, home ported in Mayport, Florida, from 1994 until 1997. He then returned to Washington, D.C. where he served as Chief of the Short Range Aids to Navigation Division at Coast Guard Headquarters. In 2000 he was assigned as Commanding Officer, CGC Steadfast home ported in Astoria, Oregon. He has been assigned as Chief of the Ninth District’s Waterways Management Branch since 2002. He was assigned as Commanding Officer, CGC Mackinaw during the ship’s first months in operation following delivery in the winter of 2006.

Awards include two Coast Guard Meritorious Service medals, three Coast Guard Commendation medals, a Coast Guard Achievement medal, and various service and unit awards.


Executive Officer

Commander Richard A. Sandoval

Commander Sandoval, a native of Elkview, West Virginia graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1987.  Upon commissioning he was assigned as Student Engineer/DCA aboard CGC Vigorous home ported in New London, CT and served aboard from 1987 until 1989.  In 1989 he was selected for flight training and upon completion, was winged as a Naval Aviator in 1990.

From 1990 until 1995, he was assigned to Air Station Savannah serving in Operations, Public Works and the Supply departments. He was then assigned to Alaska Patrol (ALPAT) Air Station Kodiak, working in the Enforcement of Laws and Treaties office.  He remained serving in that capacity until 1997 and was then assigned to Group/Air Station Port Angeles where he served as the Administration and Operations Officer until 2001.  In mid-2001, he was assigned to Air Station Traverse City and served as the Assistant Operations Officer, Public Works Officer, and then the Operations Officer; he remained in that position until 2005.  From 2005 until the spring of 2007, he was assigned as the Liaison to Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities in Texas and in the spring of 2007, he was selected and assigned as the Executive Officer (XO) of ISC Cleveland.

His awards include a Meritorious Service Medal, Three (3) Achievement Medals, a Commandant's Letter of Commendation and various unit awards.
