As the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) continues to dither in making concrete move towards getting mandatory fuel efficiency standards for India, Greenpeace "climate cops doubling up as postmen, today delivered 22,000 petitions signed by car owners and citizens across India to the Director General of BEE, Dr. Ajay Mathur, demanding mandatory fuel efficiency standards from the efficiency watchdog.

Vietnam – U.S. joint statement on product safety

The Directorate for Standard and Quality (STAMEQ) of Vietnam and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) signed a joint statement on co-operation in product safety on September 11. Accordingly, the two sides will exchange information and documents concerning consumer product safety and consumer’s awareness and welfare, develop training programmes for officials and staff taking charge of product safety; exchange experts and specialists in consumer product safety to carry out specific co-operative programmes. Addressing the signing ceremony, the two sides affirmed a priority in the process of the co-operation is that CPSC will provide training courses and information on product criteria and US market for Vietnamese producers and managers of consumer product.

Commission welcomes Colombia's decision to join European digital TV standard

The Commission today welcomed the Colombian national regulator's (the National Commission for Television CNTV) selection the European Digital Video Broadcasting standard (DVB-T) for the country's digital terrestrial TV. The terrestrial DVB standard, DVB-T, has already been adopted in Europe and by over 120 countries in Asia, Africa, Oceania and Latin America. The decision by the Colombian regulator will confirm the EU's commitment to working with Colombia and the rest of Latin America to better exploit the potential of ICT and media. Other Latin American countries (such as Peru, Venezuela, Argentina or Chile) are expected to decide soon about their digital TV standard. In August 2007, Uruguay was the first Latin American country to choose to use the DVB family of standards for its digital TV needs (IP/07/1269).

Viettel launches consumer mobile email in Vietnam

Viettel Telecom has reportedly picked Memova Mobile, Critical Path’s consumer mobile email solution designed for the mass market, as the solution for delivering push email to their subscribers in Vietnam. Critical Path, a provider of messaging software and services, pointed out that Viettel is the first operator to launch consumer mobile email in Vietnam, and has branded the service “I-Mail”.

European Parliament committee votes to water down fuel efficiency standards

The European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) has voted on a package of changes to proposed legislation on fuel efficiency standards for cars that will water them down, claim environmental groups. The proposal put before the ITRE would have required the average CO2 emissions of new cars in Europe to be reduced to 130 g/km by 2012.

China: China releases new machinery and electronic products import regulations

Effective May 1, 2008 China's Ministry of Commerce ("MOFCOM"), Customs and General Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine ("AQSIQ") collectively introduced a series of new measures regulating the import of electro-mechanical products ("EMPs"). These consist of Order No. 5, Administrative Measures for Import of Key Used Electro-Mechanical Products; Order No. 6, Measures for Implementing Automatic Import Licensing on Electro-Mechanical Products; and Order No. 7, Administrative Measures for Import of Electro-Mechanical Products. While the new regulations do not significantly alter the current regulatory regimen for the import of EMPs, they have clarified various important issues.
