November 16, 1998
STEPHEN I. GOLDRING SELECTED TO HEAD
NATIONAL BANKRUPTCY TRAINING INSTITUTE
IN COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA

WASHINGTON, D.C.--Assistant United States Trustee Stephen I. Goldring has been selected as Director of the National Bankruptcy Training Institute, it was announced today by Jerry Patchan, Director of the Executive Office for United States Trustees.

Beginning in January 1999, the National Bankruptcy Training Institute will be located in Columbia, S.C., in the recently opened National Advocacy Center, which is operated by the Department of Justice's Executive Office for United States Attorneys. The National Advocacy Center offers training for federal, state, and local prosecutors and litigators in advocacy skills and management of legal operations.

Goldring brings a wealth of law enforcement experience to his new post. He served as an Assistant United States Attorney in Pittsburgh for 12 years, including seven years as First Assistant United States Attorney, before he joined the United States Trustee Program in 1988 as the Assistant United States Trustee in Pittsburgh. Goldring began his career in the Department of Justice in 1974 as an attorney with the Organized Crime and Racketeering Strike Force. He received his law degree in 1970 from Duquesne University Law School in Pittsburgh.

In 1992, Goldring was recognized with the Attorney General's Award for Distinguished Service. Throughout his tenure with the United States Trustee Program, Goldring has taken on many special projects, including acting as regional criminal coordinator and leading several peer review teams. He has also taken an active role in internal training programs, regularly serving as an instructor.

"We will rely on Steve's vision, creativity, and initiative to help us develop a comprehensive curriculum of skills and management training," Patchan stated. "I envision that the National Bankruptcy Training Institute will offer every person in the United States Trustee Program regular access to a range of courses to enhance professional development. Further, the Institute will offer the United States Trustee Program a unique opportunity to maintain a permanent training site on the campus of the University of South Carolina and to develop an experienced corps of instructors."

"We look forward to a collaborative effort with the United States Attorneys and their partner in the Advocacy Center, the National District Attorneys Association. We also anticipate increased participation in our training programs by judges, practitioners, and legal scholars," Patchan said.

"I am excited and honored to be able to participate in the establishment of the National Bankruptcy Training Institute," Goldring stated. "I believe that the Institute will become one of the cornerstones of the United States Trustee Program."
