Synopsis
This
is the first User Meeting to be held at the ORNL site.
It will provide an unprecedented opportunity both for
those experienced with neutron scattering and those new
to the technique to learn about the capabilities at Oak
Ridge National Laboratory. As new instruments become
available at the pulsed Spallation Neutron Source and
the steady-state High Flux Isotope Reactor, interest
in these facilities will dramatically increase by the
worldwide scientific community. Now is the time for biologists,
chemists, materials scientists, and physicists to better
understand and appreciate the benefits of what an almost
order of magnitude increase in neutron intensity can
mean in terms of reduced sample size, experiment time,
and experiment performance.
Through
personal interactions between users and potential users
from academia, industry, and government research laboratories
and ORNL staff of these facilities, we believe this meeting
will continue the enthusiasm demonstrated at previous
user meetings.
SNS
and HFIR staff will solicit feedback on user processes
and services and support capabilities. Ideas will be
requested for early experiments to be performed on the
newly commissioned instruments.

Objectives
- Increase
interest and awareness of the important scientific and
engineering research challenges that can be successfully
tackled, in talks and during the poster session, by neutron
scattering in general and the instruments at SNS and
HFIR in particular
- Receive
feedback on user policies and issues; and
- Acquaint
new users with capabilities of some of the major techniques
used at SNS and HFIR through workshops
Expected
outcomes

input on user policies and processes such as the proposal

updates to SNS Instrument Team members through IAT/IDT
meetings; and

the user community through the workshops oriented to

Instrument Advisory Team Meetings
Instrument Advisory Teams (IATs) were formed around each of the first five SNS instruments by prospective users several years ago. During the early stages of the SNS Project, these teams provided significant input into the desired operating characteristics of the instrument (e.g. resolution, sample environment, ancillary equipment).
The role of these IATs is changing as the first five project funded instruments enter the installation and commissioning phases. It is expected that members of these teams will now form the nucleus of a group of "friendly" users who will aid in the commissioning process of the instrument. The SNS/HFIR User Group Meeting is an excellent opportunity to learn about the status and plans for these instruments and for additional interested researchers to join IATs. Meetings of individual IATs are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon where the progress and status of each instrument will be updated in detail. Topics for discussion will include the commissioning schedule and begin the process of identifying initial experiments that may be carried out during the "friendly user" period.

Scholarships available to attend the meeting and the workshop
Scholarships were provided to a limited number of graduate students and early career faculty at U.S. academic institutions to attend the meeting and one of the workshops held on the morning of October 13. The workshops were directed to new users of neutron scattering techniques. To be considered for a scholarship, candidates provided an abstract describing their research interests, the future role they expect neutron scattering to have in their research, and the benefits of attending this user meeting. All candidates provided their institution and academic department and how many years since they finished their degree (early career academics). Graduate students provided the name and email address of their research advisor.
These scholarships are provided through the generosity of Oak Ridge Associated Universities, the Joint Institute for Neutron Sciences, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Office of University Relations.
