Optimization, Maintenance, Modification, and Scientific Visualization of the O-Field Transient Ground-Water-Flow Model, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland

WRD PROJECT #: MD100
PROJECT CHIEF: Banks, William S.L.
BEGIN DATE: 01-September-1990
END DATE: 30-September-2000

Customers currently supporting the project:

U.S. Army, Aberdeen Proving Ground

Problem

The current transient ground-water-flow model of the O-Field area needs to be optimized in relation to the pumping of the extraction-well field. In addition, the model must be calibrated to accommodate a wide variety of hydrologic stresses from natural causes or anthropogenic influences such as changes in pumping rates or the deployment of a fire-suppression system. These data must then be presented visually in snapshot and multi-dimensional (time) animation.

Objectives

To provide the Directorate of Safety, Health, and Environment (DSHE) at Aberdeen Proving Ground a multi-dimensional visualization of the effects of various hydrologic-stress scenarios using the current transient ground-water-flow model of the O-Field area.

Approach

  1. Optimize the current transient ground-water-flow model.
  2. Simulate a variety of scenarios concerning the operation of the Permeable Infiltration Unit and well field.
  3. Adjust the current transient ground-water-flow model as necessary to account for additional knowledge of the flow system.
  4. Combine model output with multi-dimensional graphic visualization software to provide a pictorial representation of the flow system.
