Free fishing is available from the beaches and jetties, as well as three lighted piers which extend into the Corpus Christi Ship Channel: the Charlie's Harbor Pier, J.P. Luby Pier and Ancel Brundrett Pier. Anglers may use the Horace Caldwell Pier, which is lighted and stretches into the Gulf of Mexico, for $1 per day. Catches may include redfish, red snapper, shark, speckled and sand trout, sheepshead, gafftop, croaker, skipjack, and drum. Group boats provide bay and deep-sea fishing. Kingfish, mackerel, ling, pompano, bonito, red snapper, tuna, warsaw, shark and mahi mahi often caught in offshore waters. For boat owners, docking facilities and several free launching ramps.
Fishing tournaments span the calendar Jun.-Sept., including tarpon, billfish, and surf fishing tourneys. The Deep Sea Roundup, held in July, is the oldest fishing tournament on the Gulf Coast.
