How to Download and View TDI's PDF, DOC and XLS Files

Most files available for viewing from the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) are available in .pdf (portable document format), Microsoft Word (.doc), Microsoft Excel (.xls) or (.csv) files.

Two Steps to Successfully View TDI Files

1. Determine if you already have or need to obtain the necessary " viewer".

If Your File extension ends in:

2. After you download and install the viewer,

Go back to the TDI web page containing the report or section you wish to view. Select the report and it will automatically be viewable. To save a copy to your PC for future use, right click on the report and section that you want and choose"save as".

(*) NOTE

Our latest PDFs produced with Adobe Acrobat 5.0 or higher may be accessible to some screen readers. However, the screen readers encounter some problems if the PDF files include complex formatting, graphics or tables. We try to provide an extra link with each PDF document that automatically submits it to Access Adobe for conversion to HTML. If we fail to provide such a link, you may go to Access Adobe at http://access.adobe.com/onlinetools.html to request conversion of a Web page to either HTML or plain text.

Saving PDF Files

To save these PDF files onto your computer:

  1. Create a folder on your computer with an appropriate name, or you may save them temporarily to your Desktop.
  2. Click on link to the PDF file you want to save.
  3. This pdf file will then be downloaded to your computer.
  4. After downloading, the PDF file name should automatically appear.
  5. Under File, choose "Save as" and select the location where you want the PDF file to be saved - in the file folder you created or on your Desktop.

Reading PDFs

Use Windows Explorer or some other file listing program to find the PDFs you want to view. Double-click on the PDF file names and the Acrobat Reader should open and display the file.

You also may open Acrobat Reader and select File and Open from the menu bar. Locate the PDF files or folder where they were saved and select and Open one.

Using Acrobat Reader

With Acrobat Reader, you may "turn" pages of any PDF document using the arrow buttons, magnify or decrease the size of the type by using the magnifying glass, search for key words in the document by using the binocular button or print the document with the printer button.

Printing PDF Files

The major function of the Adobe Acrobat Reader is to allow you to print your own copies of PDF documents. Using the print command from the menu bar, or the button with the printer icon, will bring up the print menu on your computer screen. Here you can make a number of selections, such as number of pages or which pages to print.

I'm having trouble printing a PDF file. Any suggestions?

Even if your browser has the Adobe Acrobat plug-in, you may find that printing is easier from the free download version of Acrobat Reader (see link above). Also, printing of PDF files may be slow, compared with other files.

You may select the option "Shrink to Fit" in the print window. This makes sure that no part of the document will be cut-off in hard-copy form. This will allow you to make a master copy which you can then use to duplicate. For the best results, print from the Adobe Acrobat Reader and not your Internet browser.

I use a screen reader program for the sight-impaired. Can I view the PDF files?

I have Adobe Acrobat Reader but your PDF files won't open in my browser.

Sometimes the Acrobat browser plug-in can be corrupted, especially if you install a new version of Microsoft Internet Explorer browser after installing the Acrobat Reader. You may have to reinstall the Acrobat Reader or download the latest version and reinstall it.

If you do not want to reinstall Adobe Acrobat Reader, simply open the Reader program before you attempt to open a PDF file. This should allow you to see the PDF file in your browser.

You may also download the PDF to your computer and then open it from your Acrobat Reader.
