Following a devastating hurricane Alicia in 1983, Baytown entered into an agreement with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) which resulted in the acquisition of 400 acres of land to establish a park. Located on the western edge of town, it is a quiet oasis of natural beauty and home to hundreds of birds and animals year-round. It is on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail which extends from the Texas-Louisiana border to Brownsville.
