Founded in 1922, the Houston Zoo in Hermann Park is home to more
than 3,500 animals, from Asian elephants and California sea lions
to okapis and Komodo Dragons. Exhibits include collections of
reptiles and birds and the Wortham World of Primates, a 2.2-acre
naturalistic habitat for the Zoo's orangutans and other primates.
At the McGovern Children's Zoo's "contact area," visitors can
experience the petting zoo. Wildlife Carousel, opened in 2004,
features 64 hand-carved and hand-painted animals representing some
of the world's most endangered species. Admission fee is $7 for
adults, $5 for seniors, $3 for children ages 3-12 and free for
children 2 and under.
