Diabetes Data: Surveillance and Evaluation

Texas Diabetes CouncilEffective diabetes prevention and control programs depend on valid, reliable data gathered through surveillance and evaluation. These data sources tell us how many people in Texas have diabetes and the groups most affected. They allow for development of culturally appropriate messages and assure that resources are focused on the areas of greatest need related to diabetes.

The Diabetes Program at TDH develops epidemiological research and reports on diabetes incidence, prevalence, morbidity, and mortality in Texas. The Council also contracts for annual statewide telephone surveys through the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, participates in statewide and international collaborative data collection projects, and reviews information from the Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set (HEDIS) and the Texas Medical Foundation, which is the state’s Medicare Quality Improvement Organization.
