March 2008 — Guadalupe River SP — Saturday Evening Interpretive Programs — Come to the amphitheatre for programs focusing on a variety of natural and cultural history topics relevant to the park, Honey Creek SNA and the Texas Hill Country. Topics range from bats and snakes to astronomy and geology. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department staff, Master Naturalists and other local experts present these entertaining and educational programs. These programs are hosted by the Friends of Guadalupe River and Honey Creek, Inc. Start times vary between 7 and 8:30 p.m. and are generally 90 minutes long. Audience will participate in a fun-filled skit telling the famous story of Cassiopeia and Andromeda. Following this we'll take a tour of the night sky and check out a few of the seasonal astronomical wonders through a telescope. 8-10 p.m. (830) 438-2656. Participants will learn about the natural history and identification of butterflies found in our area, what kinds of plants attract them, and then head outdoors in search of them with Park Interpreter Craig Hensley. Attendees will learn identification tips and tricks as well as where to find them and which ones are good for use in home naturescapes. This special workshop will include both an indoor section and a walk along the trails of Honey Creek SNA in search of flowering plants. May 3, 2008 — Guadalupe River SP — International Migratory Bird Day Celebration 2008 — Celebrate the wonders of our feathered friends during this day-long celebration of birds and the roles they play in the natural world. Bird hikes will take you through the beautiful Honey Creek SNA in search of spring migrants and breeding birds ranging from orioles and hummingbirds to the endangered golden-cheeked warbler. Bird banding demonstrations will give you the opportunity to see birds up close and personal and learn how banding is used to better understand and manage bird populations. Learn how you can help birds through the planting of naturescapes, visit a bluebird trail to learn how nest boxes provide a vital habitat component to these beautiful birds. Children's games and crafts will also be featured throughout the day. 7 a.m.-3 p.m.; a donation of $2 per person or $5 per family is suggested to help support the activities of the Friends of Guadalupe River and Honey Creek, Inc.
