Aztec On The River

City: San Antonio | Region: South Texas Plains

Historic motion picture palace, the only such exotic-themed palace, has been renovated and re-opened in grand style in 2006. Visitors are invited to tour the historic structure and view its sculptures, furnishings, massive columns and murals depicted in vibrant colors. The focal point in the Grand Lobby is a massive two-story iron chandelier, which was created and installed in 1829 and recently restored by the original designer's grandson. Also, in the lobby, a free multi-million dollar special effects show happens every 90 minutes. A second free special effects show is on the River Walk level and features the theater's original mechanical room coming to life with mystery and intrigue. Guests that purchase tickets to the theater will be guided into the 483-seat auditorium and treated to a montage of black-and-white film clips accompanied by a restored Mighty Wurlitzer theater organ. The theater also offers a variety of large format films on its iWERKS Extreme Screen. Located at corner of E. Commerce and N. St. Mary's sts. and accesible from Riverwalk. Call ahead or visit Web site for showtimes. No admission fee for lobby attractions; admission fee to theater.
