About the Drugs and Medical Devices Group

The Drugs and Medical Devices Group is responsible for ensuring that human and animal drugs, biological products, medical devices, cosmetics, indoor tanning practices, and tattoo and body piercing procedures are safe and effective for their intended use, properly labeled and free of harmful additives or contaminants. In addition, the Group monitors the promotion and advertising of these regulated products in order to prevent the occurrence of unsubstantiated or fraudulent health claims.

  • The Group conducts inspections of manufacturers, distributors and retailers of drugs, devices and cosmetic products to assess and enforce compliance with applicable state and federal requirements.
  • In response to complaints and inquiries it receives, the Group conducts directed investigations where necessary and provides technical guidance to the regulated industry.
  • During times of natural disaster, the Group provides assistance to affected individuals and businesses by conducting damage surveys and offering support to other state and local officials involved in disaster relief efforts.
  • Finally, the Group conducts inspections pursuant to requests for Certificates of Free Sale by manufacturers and distributors desiring to export their products into foreign markets.
