Estimated numbers of 2006 cancer cases and deaths for all primary cancer sites are available statewide, by health service region, and for Texas counties with at least 100,000 population. Case estimates were calculated by applying 1998-2002 California age, sex, and race/ethnic-specific cancer incidence rates to corresponding 2006 Texas population estimates. California rates were used because of more complete California Cancer Registry case ascertainment and similarity between California and Texas populations. Estimated numbers of cancer deaths were calculated by applying 1998-2002 Texas age, sex, and race/ethnic-specific cancer mortality rates to corresponding 2006 Texas population estimates. The sum of Male and Female expected numbers may not always equal the Total due to rounding. Texas 2006 population estimates were provided by the Center for Health Statistics, Texas Department of State Health Services and current as of February 2006.
