MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Disaster Mental Health Services (DMHS) Program is to lessen the adverse mental health effects of trauma for victims, survivors, and responders of traumatic events, whether those events are natural or man-made.

The Disaster Mental Health Services (DMHS) Team in the Response and Recovery Branch of the Community Preparedness Section is charged with coordinating disaster behavioral health preparedness, response, and recovery efforts for Texas during and after a state or federally declared emergency. This includes guidance, technical assistance, and collaboration with decision makers at all levels of government. In addition, DMHS is tasked with coordinating the Department of State Health Services disaster behavioral health activities during the emergency response and recovery phase of a disaster and establishing FEMA Crisis Counseling teams to provide stress management and crisis counseling to any individual or group affected by the event.
