Texas Center for Nursing Workforce Studies (CNWS)

Center for Nursing Workforce Studies logo

In response to mounting concern about Texas’ nurse shortage, the 78th Texas Legislature, regular session, created a Nursing Workforce Data Section (NWDS) under the governance of the Statewide Health Coordinating Council (SHCC). The name was changed to the Texas Center for Nursing Workforce Studies (CNWS) on August 18, 2005. The Texas Department of State Health Services, Center for Health Statistics provides administrative oversight for the CNWS.

The CNWS serves as a resource for data and research on the nursing workforce in Texas. This includes collecting and analyzing data on nurses in Texas in regard to:

  • Educational and employment trends
  • Supply and demand trends
  • Nursing workforce demographics
  • Migration of nurses.
  • The Texas Center for Nursing Workforce Studies Advisory Committee (CNWSAC), under the governance of the Statewide Health Coordinating Council (SHCC), serves as a steering committee for the CNWS. The CNWSAC is comprised of nurses representing stakeholder organizations throughout the state.

We invite you to peruse all the sections of this website including the numerous reports we have published in the Reports and Publications section and check back often. For demographic and supply trends for all health professions (including nursing) as well as federal and state shortage designations, go to the Health Professions Resource Center website.
