Kerrville State Hospital

Kerrville State Hospital is one of ten mental health facilities in the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) system, and provides care for persons with major mental illnesses who need the safety, structure, and resources of an in-patient setting. Length of stay varies with the individualized need of each patient.  There are 184 beds assigned to patients hospitalized on a forensic commitment.  A forensic commitment results when an individual who is charged with a crime appears to be mentally ill and the court questions whether they are competent to stand trail for the offense.  These patients usually have a longer length of stay.

Over the past year, Kerrville State Hospital has restructured its treatment programs and assignments to units to be more responsive to the needs of the current patient population.  Since most patients are on a forensic commitment, various components of a patient’s plan are designed to increase the patient’s understanding of the legal environment and prepare them to return to court.

Kerrville State Hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission an independent, not-for-profit organization, which set standards for, and evaluates health care organizations in accordance with nationally recognized guidelines. The standards include the facility’s level of performance in key functional areas such as: patient rights, patient treatment and infection control. They also focus on the hospital's ability to provide safe, high-quality care. To earn and maintain accreditation, an organization must undergo an on-site survey by a Joint Commission survey team at least every three years.  KSH was last surveyed in October 2006 and accredited for a three-year period.  The hospital is also certified for participation in the Medicare program.
