Oldest highway - A 20-mile section near present-day US 281 between Falfurrias and Encino in Brooks County was the first road built by the highway department in 1920.

Shortest highway - Loop 168 in downtown Tenaha in Shelby County is only 391 feet long.

Longest highway - US 83 extends 899 miles, from the Oklahoma state line in the Panhandle near Perryton to the Mexico border near Brownsville.

Highest highway - SH 118 on Mount Locke in the Davis Mountains of West Texas stands 6,791 feet above sea level.

Highest bridge - The Rainbow Bridge on SH 87 near Port Arthur is 177 feet above Gulf of Mexico.

Named roads - Old San Antonio Road between Midway and Bryan-College Station is the only state highway without a number.

Roadway miles - There are almost 80,000 miles of roads on the state highway system.
