Caregivers: Watch out for the Stress

The nearly three million family caregivers across Texas — our family members, friends, partners and neighbors — often face financial, physical and emotional difficulties as they care for loved ones who are unable to care for themselves.

Many caregivers say that they experience positive emotional effects from the time, effort and work of caring for another. But caregiving can also be stressful.

Family Volunteers at DADS

Nov. 18-24 marks the observance of National Family Volunteer Week. According to the 2000 survey by the Department of Labor, 36.5 percent of adults with children under age 18 volunteered, compared to 23.7 percent of adults without children. The Gallup Organization for the Independent Sector survey found that 53.7 percent of adults with children under age 18 volunteered, versus 45.1 percent of adults without children under age 18. | Continue this story

Alberto N. v Hawkins Settlement

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission and DADS have settled a lawsuit that affects Texas Health Steps, Comprehensive Care Program-eligible children under 21 years of age. The terms of the settlement apply to Medicaid-funded nursing services, personal care services, and durable medical equipment and supplies. Please click here for more information about the Alberto N.
