Hurricane season officially begins in Texas on June 1 and runs through the end of November, with peak months in August and September. Weather forecasters have predicted an increase in hurricane activity this year over the past several years and an above-average likelihood of a major hurricane striking along the Texas Gulf Coast. Although residents of coastal areas are most at risk, tropical storm systems can travel hundreds of miles inland, creating the potential for wind damage and flash flooding throughout the state. Planning ahead can help you protect yourself, your family, and your property during hurricane season.
TDI's Role in a Major Natural Disaster
The Texas Department of Insurance's role in a disaster is to do everything possible, within the scope of its authority, to assure that policyholders receive prompt, fair and responsive service from their insurance companies. This includes assisting storm victims in locating their companies and offering consumer counseling to those who need help in filing claims and in understanding their rights and insurance coverages. The Department will provide advice directly and through the news media on smoothing the claims process and avoiding mistakes that could delay or reduce payment. TDI will remain in close contact with insurance companies and will take necessary measures to assure they are fully informed of the scope of the disaster and the needs of their policyholders. Finally, TDI will gather data on a frequent and regular basis to monitor industry performance and detect potential financial impairment of companies as a result of storm losses.
